Bionas Prepares Market for Jatropha

MALAYSIA - Malaysia is to develop its production of biodiesel from jatropha through the national company, Bio Oil Nasional.

Bionas is developing the cultivation of jatropha following successful tests by German company Elsbert, according to a report in the Borneo Post.

Using the German technology, Bionas established a processing plant on the Malaysian peninsula and not the company is encouraging farmers to plant the crop, including in Sarawak called the Projek Ekonomi Rakyat Sarawak (PERS).

The report says that Bionas is giving an 80 per cent subsidy to farmers wishing to plant seedlings and it is offering free seedlings to poorer farmers in rural areas.

The subsidy is limited to 10 acres per farmer.

The 10 acres can take 8,000 plants and can generate an income of RM 3,000 through a yield of 3.6 tonnes of jatropha seeds a month.

Bionas is reported to be getting 50 million seedlings ready through its nurseries to give to farmers in the scheme.
